Tuesday, 23 February 2010 - Slovenia is in the process of adopting the Law on Alignment of Opportunities for Persons with Disabilities. The deadline for public debate and suggestions expired in January 2010.

The Law covers the following areas:

• Prohibition of discrimination on grounds of disability;
• Measures to equalize opportunities for persons with disabilities, setting grounds for their responsibilities and obligations;
• Procedures in disputing cases of discrimination based on disability;
• Database management and data protection;
• Penal provisions.

On the national level during 2003 the Federation of Disabled Workers of Slovenia (ZDIS) has organized the following events:

Human rights are by all means a constitutional category in the Republic of Slovenia. In the Constitution of the Republic of Slovenia (Official Journal of RS, No. 33/1991) Article 14 of Chapter 2 (Human Rights and Fundamental Freedoms) lays down that to everyone are ensured equal human rights and fundamental freedoms.

During the closing Event of the EYPD 2003 in Rome the Minister of Labour, Family and Social Affairs, Dr. Vladimir Dimovski has in the Plenary session presented "AjdovššÄina - city friendly for people with disabilities" as a project developed by Federation of Disabled Workers of Slovenia during the European Year 2003.

There was a meeting of disabled persons of Alpe Adria region in Udine. Participants were representatives from disabled organizations from Carinthia (Austria), Friuli Venezia Giulia (Italy), HSUTI(Croatia) and Slovenia.

The subject of the meeting was "Europe: the Legislations which Rule Disability".

The International Federation of Persons with Physical Disability - FIMITIC and the Slovenian Member Association, the Federation of Disabled Workers of Slovenia have just published the report of the FIMITIC Congress 2001 in Prague, Czech Republic, with the main topic "TOWARDS EMPLOYABILITY  Equal Opportunities - Employability for Persons with Disabilities". The edition was published with the financial support given by the Slovenian Government Office for the Informatics.

Mr. Bengt Lindqvist, UN Special Rapporteur on Disability, Former M.P. and Cabinet Minister, Sweden was visited Slovenia in November as a guest of the Slovenian Government.

Federation of Disabled Workers of Slovenia / Zveza delovnih invalidov Slovenije is going to continue campaign together with other disabled organizations of Slovenia to change and add "disability" in to change article 14 of the Constitution to protect citizens from discrimination and that one possibility would be to include disability as one of the target areas.

The campaign is supported by European Disability Forum and Mr. Bengt Lindqvist, UNO Special Rapporeteur on Disability.
