FIMITIC present at the European Day of Disabled People Conference: December 4-5, 2006 in Brussels "Youth = Future Let´ s make an equal future for all"

Brussels, December 5, 2006

At the conference organized by the European Commission in close cooperation with the European Disability Forum and the active participation of the European Youth Forum young disabled and non-disabled people from all over Europe addressed their concerns and demands and took part in deliberations on their rights and opportunities, integration of disability in European youth policy and programmes as well as access to employment and general participation in society. FIMITIC was represented in the European Day of Disabled People 2006 in Brussels by Alicja Leginowicz, active in the Polish Association of Disabled People – PSON -, Cracow.

Since its existence in 1953 FIMITIC as the International Federation of Persons with Physical Disability devoted much time and energy to the cause of disabled people, fighting against all kind of discrimination which persons with physical disability are victims of, being essential that disable youth´ concerns are included in all agenda discussions. Youth expert groups with the goal to build a network in the FIMITIC member countries and beyond was established, giving priority to employability and also dealing with self-determination, human rights and equal opportunities.

Networking provided possibilities for exchange of views, experiences and good examples for member associations. Networking has been a good tool to empower, form and confirm self-confidence as well as demonstrate the role of young people with disability in the society. Positive impulses, energy and strength gained from this cooperation could certainly contributed to the fact that some of our young members took decision-making position in various fields of life in their countries, a position enabling them to enhance disability issues effectively.

With view to do so many youth seminars with socio-political items too place on education, vocational training, social partnership, employment etc. towards building up a social Europe.

Still there are many insurmountable barriers for young disabled people to access quality education, housing or the labour market.
