FIMITIC Seminar on “Advancing Disability Rights in Europe” in Ohrid, FYRO Macedonia, initially planned October 12-15, 2006, postponed

IMPORTANT

On behalf of the organizer - FIMITIC- and in agreement with the Macedonian hosting member association – STILM – ( Association of Physically Disabled Persons of Macedonia) we are herewith informing you of our decision to unfortunately have had cancelled the

FIMITIC- Seminar entitled “Advancing Disability Rights in Europe: People with Physical Disability “

scheduled for the period October 12-15, 2006 at Hotel Granit in Ohrid, Republic of Macedonia until a new date in near future.

The reason for this lies of course in the unforeseeable situation created at the very last moment and beyond our control. Due to very late cancellation of three important key speakers and delegates from diverse FIMITIC member associations the risk was too high to reach the aim of and fully succeed with the event.

To have done so we hope that this does not cause you too much inconvenience and place our trust that we will have your support and interest in attending when we fix the new dates.

Agreement Reached on New Convention on the Rights of Persons with Disabilities

Bonn, August 26, 2006

Delegates and representatives of the global disability movement were working hard to bring to a conclusion the draft Convention on the Rights of Persons with Disabilities when they met at the 8th Ad Hoc Committee Convention meeting at the United Nations in New York from 14 to 25 August 2006.

Already in the negotiating phase FIMITIC was involved in the development process towards a successful end with agreement on a new convention to protect the rights of persons with disabilities. This was possible thanks formal and informal expertise and contributions delivered on the consultation of the draft text concepts and substance as well as by active international cooperation done.

At the United Nations in New York FIMITIC was represented by its President Nigel Brander, member of the Irish governmental delegation to the United Nations Ad Hoc Committee.
