European Parliament of Disabled People

The European Parliament was host of the Disabled People´s Parliament Event held on November 10-11, 2003 at the European Parliament Hemicycle in Brussels. The Event was marking the 10th Anniversary of the UN Standard Rules and the European Year of Disabled People 2003.
The event was organized in co-operation with the European Commission and the European Disability Forum - EDF -.300 delegates and observers representing the disability movement from 28 European countries under attendance of many Members of the European Parliament - MEPs - took part in this unique Event.

10 years ago the First Disabled People´s Parliament was held in the European Parliament Plenary and was already a great success.

FIMITIC this time was officially represented by its President Mrs. Marija-Lidija Stiglic and by its Board member Mr. Giovanni Pagano (National President of ANMIC, Italy) as observer.

The official delegates were entitled to speak during the plenary sessions, contributing with personal testimonies, developments made and problems still experienced as well as presenting their political demands.
After the two-day sessions and exchange of views two important documents were adopted, a resolution on the follow-up of the European Year of Disabled People 2003 and a manifesto for the European Parliament elections 2004.

The most relevant demands include the need for non-discrimination legislative protection of disabled people in any aspect of their life, the qualified majority voting in the new EU Constitution to ensure the adoption of any legislative non-discrimination measures and to make the forthcoming European Parliament elections more accessible for people with disabilities and disabled candidates.
