UN Committee negotiating Treaty on Rights of Persons with Disabilities to meet at UN Headquarters

Committee negotiating Treaty on Rights of Persons with Disabilities to meet at UN Headquarters, 24 January - 2 February 2005

New York, January 22, 2005 - The work with the UN Convention makes people with disabilities more visible.

This process is not only taking place in New York but in the FIMITIC member countries as well, where it is reported from good and back experiences while the member associations are urged to approach their governments and governmental authorities, talk to them about the importance of the Convention and the support needed and to encourage them to further on include people with disabilities in the delegations to participate in the meetings.

Some FIMITIC members are in standing dialogue with the government and their representatives, others experience the oppositional attitudes.

FIMITIC, being earlier involved into the Convention drafting work directly but also in cooperation with its partner NGOs and with the European Disability Forum, will watch critically the development and call for action in the member states to change the attitudes.
