International Day of Persons with Disabilities - 3 December 2008

The 2008 theme of the International Day of Persons with Disabilities is "Convention on the Rights of Persons with Disabilities: Dignity and justice for all of us"

Since its beginning, the United Nations has been committed to realization of universal human rights for all, including the rights of persons with disabilities. This commitment  has been translated into international norms and standards, such as international human rights conventions and international, national and local action for making a difference in the lives of people all over the world.

2008 is a significant year for taking action to make this commitment a reality: the entry into force of the Convention on the Rights of Persons with Disabilities and its Optional Protocol, legally binding instruments  as well as the commemoration of the 60th anniversary of  the Universal Declaration of Human Rights (UDHR).
