THE DISABILITY MOVEMENT CALLS ON THE COMMISSION’S DIRECTORS GENERAL TO MAINSTREAM THE CRPD IN ALL EU POLICIES

Brussels, 4 October 2012 /// Disability is a cross-cutting issue, which should be mainstreamed in all EU policies. In these terms, EDF met today the Secretary General of the European Commission, Mrs Catherine Day, and the Directors General of the European Commission. They agreed to meet EDF next year in order to discuss the progress on the implementation of the Convention on the Rights of Persons with Disabilities in Europe and in view of the presentation by the EU of the report to the UN Committee on the Rights of Persons with Disabilities.

The meeting was one of the positive results of the first State of the Union on Disability, which took place last December in Brussels. Hosted by the President of the European Commission, José Manuel Barroso, it gathered Jerzy Buzek, President of the European Parliament, Herman Van Rompuy President of the European Council, and YannisVardakastanis, President of the European Disability Forum in order to discuss how to guarantee the rights and freedom of movement of 80 million Europeans with disabilities.
